Well
civic
Provides fresh water to nearby burgage plots. Plots out of reach cannot upgrade past Level 1.
Footprint sizes in Manor Lordsvary by patch and (for burgage plots) by how you draw them in-game. Use the planner's drag-to-size tool to match what you see on your map — we don't hardcode any dimensions here.
Where to place the well
- •Drop the well in the center of a cluster of burgage plots so its radius covers as many homes as possible rather than at the edge of the district.
- •Plan your housing layout around the well's reach; tight, ring-shaped blocks of plots around a central well maximize coverage.
- •A larger town usually needs several wells; space them so their radii tile across the residential area without huge overlap.
- •Keep wells close to the homes they serve rather than next to industry, since their only job is residential water access.
- •When laying out a new neighborhood, place the well first and then fit plots inside its circle to avoid stranded homes that can't upgrade.
Strategy & timing
- •Build a well early once you start raising your first burgage plots, because water access gates Level 2 upgrades along with fuel and food.
- •Add a new well each time you expand into a fresh block of housing rather than relying on one well for the whole town.
- •Wells are cheap and fast to place, so it's better to over-provide coverage than to leave a row of plots unable to upgrade.
Common mistakes
- ×Placing a single well and expecting it to serve an entire growing town, leaving outer plots stuck at Level 1.
- ×Putting the well at the corner of a district so half its radius lands on empty fields or roads.
- ×Forgetting that newly added plots beyond the existing well's reach will silently fail to upgrade.

Frequently asked
Why won't my burgage plots upgrade past Level 1?
A common cause is missing water access. Plots must sit within a well's radius (in addition to meeting fuel and other requirements) to reach Level 2 and beyond.
How many wells do I need?
It depends on town size. One well covers a cluster of nearby plots, so larger settlements need multiple wells positioned so their radii cover all residential blocks.
Does industry need wells too?
The well's water role is centered on letting burgage plots upgrade. Focus well placement on residential areas rather than workshops.
