Footprint sizes in Manor Lordsvary by patch and (for burgage plots) by how you draw them in-game. Use the planner's drag-to-size tool to match what you see on your map — we don't hardcode any dimensions here.
Where to place the iron mining pit
- •It can only be built directly on a deep iron ore deposit, so scout your region for the deposit before planning around it.
- •Connect it to your road network so ore can be hauled to smelting and the smithy without long detours.
- •Since the deposit is often away from the town center, plan a clear hauling route or storage near the pit.
- •Keep downstream metalworking buildings reasonably close to the pit to shorten the ore-to-product chain.
Strategy & timing
- •Build it when you need iron for tools or weapons and your region actually has an iron deposit available.
- •Pair it with the rest of the metal chain (smelting and the smithy) so ore becomes usable products.
- •Staff it adequately, as ore extraction can bottleneck everything downstream if under-manned.
- •If your region lacks an iron deposit, plan to import iron through trade instead of relying on a local pit.
Common mistakes
- ×Expecting to place the pit anywhere; it requires an actual deep iron deposit on the map.
- ×Mining iron with no downstream smelting or smithy, leaving the ore unused.
- ×Ignoring the long haul from a remote deposit, which slows the whole metal supply chain.

Frequently asked
Where can I build an iron mining pit?
Only on a deep iron ore deposit within your region. If the map doesn't show such a deposit, you can't mine iron locally and must trade for it instead.
Is iron ore usable on its own?
No. Ore is the raw input that must be processed further down the metal chain before it becomes tools or weapons, so pair the pit with the appropriate downstream buildings.
What if my region has no iron deposit?
You won't be able to build an iron mining pit there. In that case, import iron or finished metal goods through trade routes to supply your smithy and toolmakers.
