Burgage Plot

residential

Residential plot that houses a family. Drawn as a strip with a yard for a backyard extension (vegetable garden, apple orchard, chickens, goats, apiary).

Footprint sizes in Manor Lordsvary by patch and (for burgage plots) by how you draw them in-game. Use the planner's drag-to-size tool to match what you see on your map — we don't hardcode any dimensions here.

Where to place the burgage plot

  • Draw plots along existing or planned roads so the frontage touches a street; deep lots leave room in the backyard for a productive extension.
  • Cluster plots near the market square so the family's market stall sits within easy walking distance of food and fuel suppliers.
  • Give plots generous backyard depth if you intend to add vegetable gardens or orchards, since larger backyards yield more food per family.
  • Keep noisy or smelly production (tanneries, charcoal kilns) away from dense residential clusters to avoid hurting desirability.
  • Leave a little spacing and align frontages on the same road segment so families share market and well access cleanly.

Strategy & timing

  • Place a handful of plots early to grow your population and workforce before expanding into specialized production.
  • Assign backyard extensions like vegetable gardens to a few plots early for a cheap, steady food source that diversifies your supply.
  • Upgrade plots by satisfying their needs (food variety, fuel, church, marketplace goods) to unlock higher levels and more tax revenue.
  • Use larger plots when you want to host artisan workshops, since some crafting backyard upgrades require enough room.

Common mistakes

  • ×Drawing plots too small or too shallow, which blocks backyard extensions and caps how far the plot can upgrade.
  • ×Placing homes far from the marketplace so families can't reach stalls and approval drops.
  • ×Over-converting backyards to a single food type instead of diversifying, which fails to raise food variety needs.

Frequently asked

Why won't my burgage plot upgrade to the next level?

Upgrades require meeting that level's needs, such as food variety, fuel, marketplace access, and religious provision. Check the plot's needs panel and supply whatever is missing.

Should every plot have a backyard garden?

No. A few vegetable gardens or orchards give useful food, but you also want some plots free for artisan workshops and you don't want to tie up your whole labor force in farming backyards.

Do bigger burgage plots house more families?

Larger plots can support a second family at higher levels, which boosts your workforce, but they also demand more room and resources to keep satisfied.
